Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Aaron White tallied 25 points and 11 rebounds as the Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the Dayton Flyers in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Zach McCabe recorded 20 points and eight rebounds for Iowa (18-16), while Melsahn Basabe chipped in 11 points and Bryce Cartwright dished out 11 assists. Even though the Hawkeyes are the seventh-seed, they were the hosts in this matchup due to the NCAA Tournament first round game taking place at UD Arena tonight.
For second-seeded Dayton (20-13), Kevin Dillard had 23 points, six assists, and five rebounds, while Paul Williams added 12 points.
Iowa shot a lights-out 60 percent from the field in the first half as it took a 44-41 lead into the break.
The Hawkeyes continued their hot streak after halftime, shooting 15-of-28 from the floor in the second half. They led by as many as 15 in the final minutes.
Dayton was outscored by Iowa in the paint, 48-30.
Iowa advances to play Oregon in the second round.
