Recap: Valparaiso vs. Loyola-Chicago
Valparaiso, IN (Sports Network) - Ryan Broekhoff had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds as the Valparaiso Crusaders fended off an upset minded Loyola-Chicago Ramblers squad 66-62 in overtime in Horizon league action at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
Will Bogan scored 16 points and Kevin Van Wijk added 12 for Valparaiso (20-10, 13-4 Horizon) which had lost two of its previous three.
Ben Averkamp poured in 21 points and was a rebound short of a double-double for Loyola-Chicago (7-20, 1-15) which has lost 13 of its last 14. Denzel Brito netted 12 and Christian Thomas added 10 for the Ramblers.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half with Valparaiso entering the locker room with a 26-24 lead by shooting 40.0 percent from the floor and outscoring Loyola-Chicago 15-3 from beyond the arc.
Averkamp netted two free throws with 29 seconds remaining to tie the game at 54-54 and a Broekhoff three pointer missed in the waning seconds on Valparaiso's next possession to send the game to overtime.
Loyola-Chicago was the first team to score in the extra frame but the Crusaders then went on a 9-1 run and never looked back going 3-of-4 from the free throw line in the final minute.
Valparaiso shot 44.7 percent overall in the game which was just slightly better than Loyola-Chicago which hit 42.1 percent of its shots in the game.Game Notes
