Recap: Providence vs. Connecticut
Providence, RI (Sports Network) - Bryce Cotton scored a game-high 22 points as Providence battled back from a double-digit deficit to take down Connecticut, 72-70, in Big East Conference action at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Cotton made good on 5-of-9 shots behind the three-point line and all five of his free-throw attempts for the Friars (15-15, 4-13 Big East) as they won their second straight outing. Before fouling out LaDontae Henton added 18 points and seven rebounds, while Gerard Coleman posted 13 points and seven boards of his own. Vincent Council logged nine points and a game-high 11 assists and Kadeem Batts 13 boards in a reserve role for the hosts.
The Huskies (17-12, 7-10) were paced by Andre Drummond who registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Ryan Boatright with 13 points, Jeremy Lamb 12 and Roscoe Smith 11 points as the team suffered a second straight loss and the third in the last four outings.
Providence struggled to find the basket in the first half, shooting just 34.4 percent from the floor and 3-of-9 behind the three-point line, yet the team trailed by just two points at the half, 32-30.
In the second half UConn managed to open up a 51-37 advantage with 12:30 remaining in the contest, but from there the Friars took control and gained significant momentum.
At one point the hosts put together a 19-3 run and beyond that built an eight- point lead with just over one minute remaining in regulation. However, the Huskies fought back as well and worked the deficit down to just three points at 72-69.
With 3.5 seconds left Shabazz Napier, who finished with just seven points and eight assists, stepped to the free-throw line and sank the first attempt to make the score 72-70. However, his miss on the second try was rebounded by the Friars and they in turn held on for the win.
In a game that experienced six ties and five lead changes, the Huskies hurt themselves with just 4-of-16 shooting from three-point range.
