The Red Bluff CHP officer seriously injured in a crash last night is expected to survive. Officer Dave Madrigal, a 22-year veteran of the force, was hurt when his cruiser was broadsided on Highway 99 near Dairyville.
We don't have specifics on the officer’s condition right now, but we know he is at Mercy Medical Center, surrounded by family.
Officials say Officer Dave Madrigal was responding to a request for backup when he made a u-turn on highway 99 near Dairyville just before 7 Thursday night.
“Activated his lights and pulled to the shoulder, and proceeded to make a u-turn. was broadsided in the driver door by a south bound vehicle,” said Officer Jake Bushey of the CHP Red Bluff Office.
The driver and passenger in the SUV received only minor injuries. Miraculously, madrigal was conscious and able to radio for help from his badly mangled patrol car.
“They were able to extricate the officer and he was transported by air to Mercy Medical Center in Redding with major injuries,” said Bushey.
Fellow officers and family were at the hospital today watching over madrigal, eager to learn his prognosis.
“He is stable, he is expected to make a full recovery. but i am not able to release any details as far as his specific injuries at this time,” said Bushey.
One thing that is clear, if he does return to the force it will be some time, Which comes as a blow to the close knit station, where madrigal has been since 2007.
“Morale is pretty good, we are just trying to take care of business, getting Dave’s family taken care of and make sure that they get everything that they need,” said Bushey.
As often happens in these tragedies, his wife and two daughters have a whole community behind them.
“Even the community, there has been a strong outpouring of support from the community as well as the other law enforcement, public agencies in the area,” said Bushey.
This is not the first time that Officer Madrigal has had a brush with death. In 2008 he was shot in the leg during a standoff with a suspect in Gerber. Luckily another officer was there to rescue him with a patrol car.
