(AP) - California State University trustees have indefinitely postponed discussion of a set of proposed tuition hikes.

The issue had been expected to be taken up at Tuesday's board meeting in Long Beach, but spokesman Mike Uhlenkamp says the trustees decided to gather more input before reviewing the administration's proposal.

The proposal has sparked an outcry by students who had planned to protest at the trustees' meeting Tuesday and Wednesday.

The 23-campus Cal State system is considering three new fee hikes designed to push students to earn their degrees faster and free up an estimated 18,000 enrollment slots.

Students say the fee boosts would punish students who may have to quit a class because of job pressures or switch majors.
