The City of Orland has banned smoking outdoors. In a three to two vote Monday night, the city council approved the smoking ban first brought to their attention by local high school students.
Students Working Against Tobacco, or SWAT is concerned about second-hand smoke in public places.
The ban restricts smoking within 20 feet of a business' public entrance and in city parks.
But the Orland Mayor Wade Elliott says there still will be specific areas where people can smoke in public.
Elliott says, “One of the allowances we did make through this process to be considerate for those who smoke, because it is legal and we wanted to be respectful with that as we can and will designate smoking areas.”
People will face a $25 fine if they're caught smoking in a non-designated area.
However, Mayor Elliott says it will be mostly self-regulated, as enforcing it won't be the police department’s top priority.
There is a 30 day appeal period.
It's expected to go into effect in March.
