A Marine with ties to Redding was killed in Afghanistan Tuesday.
All the department of defense is saying about the death of 23-year-old Marine Sgt. William Stacey is that he was killed during combat operations in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan.
But online reports from a journalist who was embedded with Sgt. Stacey's unit in November says he was killed by an IED while on foot patrol. That same journalist remembers Stacey as “the type of marine war movies are made about," going on to describe him as assured and unflappable.
Stacey's online profile shows he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2007 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton as part of the 2nd Battalion's Marine Expeditionary Force and was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan.
It does appear Stacey only lived in the Redding area for a short time, spending most of his life in the Seattle area.
