Police in Redding are trying to piece together a mystery, and a skeleton that was discovered on the west side of town.

Hikers discovered human remains Tuesday afternoon about half mile behind the Old Mill house Deli in Redding.

A group of officers returned to the area this morning and plan to conduct a grid search in hopes of find all 206 bones.

“We have recovered quite a few bones including the skull. So now we are going to begin a search to see how many more we can locate. They have been there for a while and it looks like animals have gotten into it and scattered those bones around,” said Sgt. Brian Barner with the Redding Police Department.

At this point officers cannot determine the cause of death or if foul play was involved.

The area is known for transient camps, but none were in the vicinity.

The coroner plans to use dental records to identify the decedent.
