Parents and community members in Plumas County are uniting, they say it's to save their schools. A budget study of the Plumas County School District was released in January, and several recommendations were made by the administration team. Recommendations include school consolidations, along with possible school closures. " This is happening way too fast, and we need to get community input to come up with a better solution," said Chester resident Trudi Dillard.
The administration team recommends consolidating the elementary schools in both Indian Valley and Quincy, and closing the Greenville High School. Students from Greenville would then be bussed to Chester High. But parents are against the recommendations, and say busing children is too dangerous. " Forcing them to be bussed halfway across the country, over an hour a day to school, I just don't think that's a viable option," said Don Schlueter. Dillard adds, " When we have snow, you're looking at probably a couple of hours on a bus with chains and no seat belts."
The recommendations come in part due to major enrollment losses, combined with the loss of regular federal timber payments and other tax revenues. Those issues have the district facing a four-million dollar deficit. But some community members say closing schools isn't the answer. They say if the school goes, the town is sure to follow. " No body will move here with small children if we do not have a school," said Dillard.
The board is weighing all options, and hearing from community members before making a decision, which should come in April. A decision Indian Valley resident Guy McNett feels is coming way too soon. " It doesn't make sense. It's not prudent, it's not good business sense, it's not good education sense. We need more time."

I hope that the citizens of Plumas County prevail and are able to take back the control of their schools from the officials who are supposed to serve them - this is very sad. It's a powerful example of what can happen when local citizens don't pay attention to local politics! Right hear in Butte the school board has just voted to appoint a new Superintendent when Don McNelis retires in June, rather placing the position on the ballot, a HUGE mistake! Mr. McNelis will then be largely in charge of finding his own replacement - as a parent in the Durham district I can tell you that letting him be in charge of finding his own replacement when he left Durham turned out to be a DISASTER! His hiring decisions as Supe of schools to boot have genrally been awful, what was once a highly competent administrative staff with many years of experience has been decimated and replaced with "yes-people", none of whom could step in to run the county office. Letting him be involved in hiring the new Supe can only lead to dosaster! It's an elected position, there a 2 already scheduled elections in 2012, JUne and Nov. If people don't call their local school board members and complain now they might find themselves out on the picket lines a year form now, just like those folks up in Plumas. It's an elected position, let the voters decide!

Tnhism is sad - I hpe the residents of Plumas CO prevail in their fight to have a voice in the local schools. This is a great example of what can happen when citizens don't pay attention to local politics. Right here in Butte Co the school board has decided to replace the retiring superintendent w/o holding an election - a move that may lead to the same type of disaster here! Don McNelis (current SUPE) has a long history of TERRIBLE hiring decisions, including his replacement when he left Durham to take over the CO Supe job. To let him lead the process at the county level is asking for DISASTER. Every citizen of Butte should be contacting their local school board members to protest - let the voters decide so we don't end uo like these folks in Plumas!
