A former Anderson police officer is arrested on federal civil rights charges for sexually assaulting a woman while taking her to jail
28 year-old Bryan Benson was arrested on Monday.
A federal indictment charges Benson with a federal civil rights offense in connection with an alleged sexual assault of a woman he had arrested in May of 2010.
Benson is charged with depriving her of her constitutional rights as well as obstruction of justice, and causing a false entry in an official record.
Benson previously pleaded no contest in Shasta County Superior Court to assault by a police officer and lewd acts, but the federal government decided to pursue its own charges.
Benson is scheduled to appear in federal court on Tuesday.
If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
