A Northern California teenager remains in the hospital after allegedly escaping from a home in Tracy where he says he was held captive for more than a year.
Police say the 17-year-old boy had bruises all over his body, and bloody wounds from shackles around his ankles. Employees at a sports club in Tracy were shocked when an emaciated, scared, bruised and bloody teenager walked in Monday, wearing only a pair of oversized boxer shorts.
Lea Leonard works at the health club. "You could tell something was wrong. He was holding a chain around his ankle with a padlock on it."
The 17-year-old told the manager he was picked up after running away from a foster home in Sacramento, and held captive at a home in Tracy. Sports Club Manager Chuck Ellis says "he was just terrified, the poor little guy, he kept saying please don't let them take me. Hide me, hide me."
Police went to the home and arrested 34-year-old Michael Schumacher and his 30-year-old wife, Kelly. They're being charged with torture, kidnapping, child endangerment and false imprisonment. Police are also searching for 43-year-old Caren Ramirez, who may be the boy's aunt.
