The various pads available at your local drug store are orthodics, and they're very reasonably priced. Arch supports, foam shoe liners and metatarsal pads all fit into this category. Unfortunately, relief for most people will require a more effective, and far more expensive, type of orthodic. These are custom made from a cast or impression of your foot. There are three major types. Flexible accommodative orthodics are designed to provide relief from a diabetic or tight foot. Semi-rigid orthodics help control abnormal foot motion and offer some shock absorption. They are useful for shin splints and certain knee problems. Rigid orthodics control the motion of feet suffering from any of several deformities. For more information about orthodics and the possible relief they may offer, ask a foot specialist in your area.
