The exact cause of migraine headaches isn't known, but there's no doubt that these extremely painful headaches can be debilitating. Some studies suggest that migraine sufferers may react to specific biological and environmental factors, such as hormones or pollution. Other studies show a rapid decrease in the blood flow to the brain during migraine headaches. Chiropractors can treat migraines successfully in several ways. The first is chiropractic adjustments to the back and neck. Adjustments may relieve tension on muscles and nerves and normalize blood flow to the brain. Regular adjustments may be needed to produce results, especially if your migraines are frequent. A chiropractor may also examine your diet and test you for food allergies or chemical sensitivities. Your migraines may be caused or aggravated by preservatives in foods or by dairy products. If so, a special diet may be prescribed. Some research has shown that certain vitamins may alleviate migraines or reduce their frequency. A chiropractor can suggest nutritional therapy that's best suited to your situation. Finally, many doctors believe that stress plays a major role in migraines, so you may be advised to exercise or practice other stress relief techniques on a regular basis.
