In today's Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week, we introduce you to a Chico high student athlete who's reaching her goals both on and off the soccer field.
Chico high's Katie Brown has been kicking her way around a soccer field for 10 years. Today, she is at the top of her game.
"Just doing the best that I can, working hard, trying to get better every day," says the humble Brown.
Coach Sarah Parker says Brown is a perfectionist when it comes to just about everything on the pitch.
"You know she gives it 110% at practice, she gives it 150% in games, and then just being hard working makes her kind of a picky person, but she really expects that much of herself," says Parker.
One of her best skills? Shooting.
Opposing goalies hate to see Brown anywhere near the box because she is as good as gold near the net.
The senior forward has 16 goals in 12 games.
"I'm definitely goal hungry, it's something that I'd like to get in a game but obviously if there's a teammate in a better position I hope to pass if off to them," says Brown.
Brown also has 9 assists on the season, and her stellar play has helped the Panthers to a 9-2-1 record.
"She really wants us to be a good team as a whole rather than Katie Brown as a player," says Parker.
Just like Brown excels on the field, she says it's all about putting forth the same dedication in the classroom
"Every day after practice I could go hang out with friends, go do other things, but I try to make myself go home and do my homework," says Brown.
That hard work is paying off. Brown carries a 4.14 GPA while taking several AP courses. Following high school, Katie is committed to playing soccer at Chico State. She says she's excited to put her skills to the test.
"I'm just looking forward to the competition, to those practices where everyone is good and it's a competition every single day for your spot, so I'm excited for that," says Brown.
With all that's she's already accomplished, it's safe to say the future looks bright for this soccer star.
