Every Christmas there's the toy that every child wants, and the toy that every parent will do almost anything to get for their child. This year the hottest selling toy is the Zhu Zhu Hamster. Around the county, there's actually been fights over the few Zhu Zhu hamsters that are in stores. In Chico, shoppers lined up late Thursday night for a chance at buying a Zhu Zhu at Toys R Us for just $9.99.
There were only a hundred them, but devoted mother Deedra Coleman waited in the cold to get one for her daughter. "I went on line. They're selling for triple what they're selling in the store and they're out of stock every where. Toys R Us says they have them. So I'm here. I always thought people were crazy for doing it, and I'm out here, so I'm one of them now."
The store opened at midnight Friday morning. A few late shoppers came in through the exit door, irking those at the entrance, some of whom had waited in line for up to seven hours. Shalina Seale got her Zhu Zhu, because as one of the first 100 in line, she got a special ticket, guaranteeing her she'd get her toy. "My kid wanted one, it's better than a real hamster."
As for Deedra Coleman, she came away with two Zhu Zhus, but her shopping isn't finished yet. "Mission accomplished, but they didn't have the accessories, so I'm on a new quest. But I have a month, so we'll see how it goes."
Chico's Toys R Us had another 50 Zhu-Zhu's come in Friday afternoon. They went fast and the store management it wasn't sure when its next shipment will come in. They say they're hard to come by.
