Prison guards shot an inmate to break up an assault at the High Desert State Prison in Susanville.
Officials say three inmates refused to stop kicking another inmate on the ground as ordered yesterday, so two warning shots were fired before one of the suspects was shot in the right hip.
The assault victim lost consciousness and was hospitalized.
The inmate with the gunshot wound was also hospitalized.
The other two inmates were placed in segregation.
All of those involved were from Southern California.
