It's an announcement that shocked both same sex marriage supporters, and traditional marriage supporters. Friday morning the Supreme Court decided to hear the issue of same sex marriage. Members of the LGBT community, like Nicholas Mertz, say this has been a long time coming. "It's a blessing that Washington is ok with it now, and we have more than six states that are ok with it, but I kinda feel like it's long overdue."
But supporters of traditional marriage, like Pleasant Valley Baptist School Teacher Travis Goodman, couldn't disagree with more. "Marriage was designed by god, created by god, instituted by god, and therefore marriage should always remain what god intended it to be." Goodman told our crews that he will always stand on the side of the word of god, and says that word corresponds with the will of the people of California. "If we truly are a nation where the people do speak, then we don't need an elect group of people now telling a group of people that have already voted that they are correct, or incorrect in their stance."
But Mertz says it's not just about marriage, it's about rights. "When it comes to medical bills, and all that good stuff. People, you're partners with someone for a long time, you deserve the right to feel equal."
But Goodman says inequality is not the issue, it's the sanctity of his religious views. "We're not standing against somebody that's choosing something, but we're standing specifically on the fact that marriage is between a man, and a woman according to the word of god."
