The man who shot at police Tuesday in Cottonwood was released from prison under AB 109 prison realignment.

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that William Kinyon fired several rounds at CHP officers during Tuesday’s high speed pursuit.

The Sheriff’s Office tells says that Kinyon opened fire on police more than once.

The incident started after he failed to pull over for a traffic stop. Officers were chasing the red pickup along Gas Point Road near Carriage Lane. They say Kinyon made a u-turn and fired at oncoming police while still driving. The officers fired back but the pursuit continued.

Kinyon turned north on to Happy Valley Rd and two women leapt from the vehicle.

Police say Kinyon then got out of the truck and used it as protection as he fired more shots at police. The two officers on scene shot Kinyon and ended the incident.

Kinyon will be charged with attempted murder and various other charges.

“Numerous felony charges stemming from the investigation, including felony evading an officer and also assault with a firearm and numerous counts of negligent discharge of a firearm,” said Detective Gene Randall of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.

Kinyon was released from prison in 2011 under AB 109. He had a warrant and would have been arrested if he pulled over for the CHP traffic stop.

He apparently knew this, he reportedly told the women in his car he was not going back to prison just before he pulled out a gun.
