Chico State is celebrating black history month with a unique photography exhibit. The Black and White in Black and White is a collection of photographs taken by African American photographer John Johnson between 1910 and 1925 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Curator and Chico photographer Doug Keister discovered a set of Johnson's glass plate negatives at a garage sale in 1965.
But it wasn't until 1999 that he realized how special they were.
Keister says, “What's really interesting about them mostly is that they're environmental photographs. They’re pictures of people where they live. And they're not just snapshots, they're beautifully crafted photographs.”
Keister says even the Smithsonian has shown interest in the collection.
The Black and White in Black and White will be on display February 1st through the 24th.
The grand opening will be held next Tuesday, February 7th at 5:00 p.m. in the Humanities Center Gallery in Trinity Hall.
