Driver Killed in Silver Dollar Pit Mishap

A local race car driver died Friday night from injuries he received when a tire he was inflating apparently exploded.  It happened around 5 p.m. at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.  David Tarter, 30, of Chico, was reportedly working on his sprint car prior to the Friday evening races, when the accident happened.  Witnesses say he received head injuries when the tire exploded.  Tarter was rushed to Enloe Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.  The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
