Rain returned to the North State Wednesday morning, and heavy showers along with falling leaves cause localized flooding in Chico. "We've got four crews out. We added the extra crew for today, Thursday, and Friday, and we'll see how much we can get picked up before the weekend," according to Chico General Services Director Ruben Martinez.

The flooding conditions paired with wet leaves can cause issues for drivers, but Officer Bobby Vasquez of the California Highway Patrol says it doesn't take flooding to cause problems. Wet roadways alone account for a large portion on accidents during storms. "Speed is definitely a big factor that contributes to a lot of that. So, slow down, give yourself a big enough space cushion, and keep your eyes on the road."

While rain has been the big story so far, PG&E Spokesperson Paul Moreno told our crews the power company is preparing for strong winds expected over the next couple of days. "Usually the winds are the most problematic for us, because that can blow tree branches into power lines, and slap lines together. So, we are anticipating outages, and we are well staffed for that."

Moreno says there are a few things people can do to prepare for an outage, such as having blocks of ice in the freezer for water, fully charge your cell phone, have candles or a flashlight, and if you have a portable radio, keep it handy.

As for the flooding, Martinez says a little effort could go a long way in preventing floods. "Grab a rake, and move some of the leaves away from the storm drains. As long as you stay on the sidewalk, and remain safe, that's the best thing they can do."
