Demonstrators gathered outside Chico City Hall today to rally support for Proposition 29 on the June ballot. It's called the "California Cancer Research Act."
Prop 29 seeks to raise the tax on cigarettes by a dollar a pack .
It would generate nearly 600-million dollars a year to support new research and education to fight cancer, lung and heart disease ... and to help find cures.
Radiation Oncologist Michael Baird says, "In my eye it's a win-win for everybody. If cigarettes became too expensive to smoke it essentially improves their health, stops them from being role models for small kids, and improves the general health ... secondhand smoke in the community."
Prop 29 supporters say California's current tobacco tax is significantly lower than 33 other states at less than a dollar per pack. To find out more visit www.californiansforacure.org.#
