Police in Chico say many drivers are not stopping for a flashing traffic signal on West Second Street near the university.
Police say it's dangerous because students are back, yet a number of complaints have come in about motorists not stopping when they should be.
The signal is flashing because of construction on a new parking garage. By law it should be treated as a stop sign.
Sgt. Rob Merrifield says, "A lot of motorists aren't aware they're legally required to stop there, or just aren't paying attention. We're seeing a lot of pedestrians crossing the street, and reports of near misses there."
Merrifield says officers are trying to get the word out, as well as stepping up enforcement through citations.
Meanwhile, city traffic engineers are looking at other solutions.##
