Readers in Butte County could soon be checking out library books without ever leaving the house.

"This will offer 24-hour access to be able to download books," explained Linda Mielke, Butte County Library Director.

Tuesday the Board of Supervisors will vote on a new system that would allow you to log-on to check out.

Overdrive.com is an online media source that offers more than 100,000 titles you can download on your computer. It also has more than 1,000 audio-books to put on an mp3 player. All at a price only a library can provide.

"This is a free service, just like taking a book out of a library," said Mielke.

Overdrive is already used by more than six thousand libraries world wide. Butte County has a preliminary agreement with the company in place.

Details of the system are still being ironed out, but most titles would be available for about a week. If the proposal is approved by the Board, the online system could be up and running in a few months.
