Investigators believe it was a five-year-old boy who accidentally shot his two siblings in Burney.

Their father, Kevin Venia, was in Shasta County Superior Court Wednesday morning.  He was charged with felony child endangerment, child abuse, and weapons charges.

Detectives say he left a sawed-off shotgun within reach of the children and then left the home.

That's when the five-year old reportedly picked up the gun and accidentally shot his two-year-old brother and four-year-old sister. The two children were severely injured and are listed in serious condition at U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

Venia shielded his face from our cameras, as he pleaded not guilty. But he also claimed he did not understand the charges against him. He remains held on $500,000 bail.
