A daring rescue took hours in Upper Bidwell Park in Chico Tuesday, after a mountain biker was injured in a crash.
It involved several different agencies, and two helicopters .
According to authorities, the man was biking with a friend on the South Rim Trail around 11:30 a.m., when he wiped out in a sharp corner and hit a rock.
It took Chico firefighters 45 minutes just to hike down to him. Because the terrain is so steep and rugged, they had to call cal fire to help haul him out of the canyon with a helicopter.
Cal Fire Engineer Byron Vance told Action News at the scene that, "Chico City Firefighters and Butte County Fire had already made access to the patient, started patient care so we were able to come in and just insert myself and the other rescuer. We went down and rigged the patient for a hoist rescue."
The 30-year-old victim was then flown to a landing zone and transferred to one of Enloe Medical Center's Flight Care helicopters.
The CHP closed part of Highway 32 near Ten Mile House Trail for a few minutes during the rescue.
Authorities say the cyclist hurt his leg, hip and possibly lower back... but they were not sure of the full extent of the injuries.###
