"Shop local" is a new buzz phrase that has been popularized by local businesses trying to promote sales. Now, the concept is taking off in Anderson in two very unique ways.
It is being called Shop Anderson Tuesday, it started back in October, businesses offering discounts on what is generally their slowest day of the week. But now Tuesdays have turned into a day that promotes the shops every day of the week.
The idea began out of necessity, people seemed to be over looking Anderson businesses.
“We are trying to keep people from having to shut their doors and the more people that stay here and shop locally, the better chances of that,” said Debe Hopkins, Manager at the Anderson Chamber of Commerce.
Hopkins says Supervisor Les Baugh and his wife came to her with the idea for shops to have discounts on Tuesday's last year. Since then the list of participating businesses has grown to about 15.

“Not so much geared to get people in your store on Tuesday but geared to get people thinking about you everyday and shopping locally everyday,” said Hopkins.
“We are just trying to get people down to Anderson, we have a lot of great local businesses that are not chains,” said Dan Burton who owns Kaleidoscope Coffee and offers up a Tuesday deal. “I think it puts us on peoples minds, if they come down to try us, because of the discount and then they find out how wonderful it is and then they come back”
Another way businesses are helping each other out is with cross promotions, bring your receipt to a neighboring store and get 10% off.
At the nearby Kate's Dog House, the receipt referral generates more business than the Tuesday promotion.
“And what I find is people will stop at Dan's and get coffee and then they will call me based on the flier and the receipt and the 10%,” said Laurie Myers, Owner of Kate’s Dog House.
The cross promotion encourages people to shop at not just one, but several local businesses.
“Thats our hope, the fewer people that shut their doors the better for everybody and that is part of what is driving that,” said Hopkins.
