Pumpkins, face painting, hay rides... it all makes for a great autumn day for a kid.  In tonight's Kids In Action, reporter Rick Carhart takes us to the Orland High School farm,
where FFA students showed the little kids around.

nats "we're going to the pumpkin patch...come on"

Kindergarten, first, and second graders spent their morning not learning how to read and write, but how to pick the perfect pumpkin.

nats "it's heavy"

The Orland FFA chapter ran the event, painting faces, showing off their livestock, and running them through a hay maze.

Event chair person Nicole Mosier says, "we wanted to give back to the little kids, interact with each other, for them to know the high school students."

High school students in the FFA program and the ag department planted the pumpkins in July, and spent the summer taking care of them until the kids could take them home for Halloween.

Orland FFA Chapter reporter Tyler Batchelder says, "some of them, the pumpkins are bigger than them, but we help them...just seeing the smile on their faces, it's just a great thing."

Everything was free for the children, and they were happy to get out of class for a little while.

Mill Street School Second grader Osvaldo Alcaraz says, "we could play, pick pumpkins, color, ride tractors."

And the high school students got something out of it too.

Orland FFA Advisor Anna Canon says, "we have 30 high school students working out here, teachers let them out of class, they're getting experience at the farm that they wouldn't get in the classroom."

This was the first year for the pumpkin patch field trips, and it will be back next year.

Anna says, "we've had rave reviews from teachers. Teachers that aren't here wish they would have come.

Nicole says, "we're going to put it all together in a binder so we can do the same thing next year, since it went so well."

In Orland, I'm Rick Carhart for Action News.

And if you know a young person who should be featured on our Sunday 'Kids In Action', you'll find the nomination form on our web sites.
